When you think about boutique hotels you probably picture a big fancy building in Rome or Paris that costs a fortune. International travel has mostly been off the cards in recent times and the staycation movement has swept across the country! Well, I’m here to tell you all about a brand new boutique hotel in York! The Bishop and Bison hotel is located in the heart of the medieval City of York and I can’t wait to tell you all about our stay with the wonderful owners!

If you’re looking for staycation ideas in the UK this summer or just want some luxury accommodation for the racing, the Bishop and the Bison boutique hotel in York is a fantastic choice! Want to know a little bit more? Let’s get into it!

Please be aware that our stay at the Bishop and Bison was gifted in exchange for a feature on this blog. However all of my experiences and opinions are honest and genuine.

About the Bishop & The Bison

The Bishop & Bison isn’t your traditional Bed and Breakfast hotel. Every single detail has been carefully designed and planned in order to provide guests with the most comfortable experience possible. Originally built in 1875, the old Victorian house has been lined with luxury wallpapers and furnishings to create spaces that are full of character. Staying here is a truly unique and exciting experience for every guest! The owners, Jonathan and Anthony are well travelled and have designed their boutique B&B based on their own experiences and things close to their hearts.

Nowadays a lot of us are more conscious about the food we eat, waste we create and where our everyday purchases come from. The Bishop and the Bison take a great deal of responsibility in where they source their products and services from, sourcing from local suppliers whenever possible.

The Rooms

The Bishop and the Bison has a total of 8 rooms for guests to enjoy as well as the stunning President’s lounge, the Bishopthorpe dining room and if the sun’s out you can also enjoy the lovely little courtyard. All guest rooms are individually named and follow the theme of either the Bishop or the Bison. (They’re all stunning)!

Upon entering your room you’ll be greeted with funky and exciting décor, a double bed (some rooms have larger beds too), space for hanging your clothes and a generous sized bathroom. The beds are very comfortable, and the large Victorian windows let plenty of light into the rooms! Our room ‘The Wolsey’ was styled in white and Navy with a large floor standing mirror and small seating ares. It also has a beautiful view of Clifton Parish Church across the road.

All rooms come equipped with an ensuite shower, Lavazza coffee machine, high speed Wi-Fi and a hairdryer.

Location & logistics

The Bishop and the Bison is located in the small suburb of Clifton and just a 10–15-minute walk gets you into the City centre. Perfect if you’re looking to spend your time in your shopping, exploring the city’s long history. The River Ouse pathway is also a lovely option if you’d prefer a walk into York with a touch of nature!

If you’re travelling to York by Train the hotel is only a 20-minute walk or you could grab a taxi which would take you around 5 minutes. There’s plenty to do You’ll also find some great self-guided walking tour booklets in your room upon arrival.

If you’re driving to York then there’s also a few parking spaces available to the rear and side of the Hotel. Make sure you check they are available before you arrive to avoid the expensive parking in the city centre. If you’re more of a cyclist then there’s also the option to store your wheels in the garage overnight!

Food & Drink

The best bit, right?! What’s a getaway without great food and drinks? Well, it’s a good job the Bishop serves a bloody good brekkie! They have a wide range of options too, if the full English doesn’t take your fancy, there’s plenty of other options including vegetarian and vegan alternatives. If you’d prefer to head out into York nice and early there’s also an option to have a cold breakfast to go!

If you’re looking for somewhere in York to enjoy an evening meal then you’ll be able to get plenty of recommendations from the front desk, but make sure you book in advance as the more popular restaurants will get very busy in peak season and race weekends.

Prefer a cuppa and a scone? You could always have a luxurious afternoon tea! Speak to Jonathan or Anthony and they’ll take care of all the arrangements!

Gin or wine lover? The Bishop has a fantastic selection of Gins from all around the world for you to enjoy in their courtyard. If beer is more your thing, then they’ve got this covered too!

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for somewhere exciting and relaxing to staycation this year, then I cannot recommend The Bishop and the Bison enough. The hotel is beautiful. We loved out stay and would happily stay at the Bishop again! Everything was spotlessly clean, the rooms had everything that we could have needed for a staycation in York!

The hosts, Jonathan and Anthony are very welcoming and went above and beyond to make sure our stay was comfortable. They have a great knowledge of York but if you’d rather kick back and enjoy a gin in the courtyard, they know plenty about that too!

Ultimately we were left asking ourselves one question… What more could you ask for from a boutique hotel in York? The answer… Not much!

We hope to be back at the Bishop soon for another enjoyable stay!
